Nathan's Big Day

So Thursday night was one of those nights that you don't get much sleep. I would be having a great dream that seemed to go on forever and when I woke up to look at the clock, only an hour had gone by! URG! So it was a long night to say the least. At 6 am I got up and called the Family Birth Center to make sure that I could come in at 7am. There was room so I took a shower, ate some breakfast, gave my mom some last few details about taking care of Amelia and then we headed to the hospital. Got there just a little bit before 7 and they got us right into our room and got things underway. I was started on the pitocin around 8:30am. Dr. Ramseur came in at 11am and broke my water. Shortly thereafter, I wanted my epidural (we'll get into that later). So the doctor came in and got that started. It took over 1/2 an hour to get that going because the contractions hurt so bad that she had to stop. Ok. So it was noon, had my epidural and things were going good. Well, by 12:15 the contractions started hurting again. Not my uterus, but in my rectum and cervix. It hurt SO BAD. I wanted to cry through the contractions. So I had the anesthesiologist come back to "fix" me. The nurse checked me first (at 12:30) and she said I was only dialated to a 5. I thought I was going to be in labor for HOURS longer and I didn't know how much more pain I could take. So the doc comes back in and explains to me that when she numbed me, she did it so that only my uterine contractions would be numb and that I would feel all the pressure and pain in my rectum and cervix so I could know how hard to push. Well, by 1:00 I was in so much pain and I felt like I had to push SO BAD. My regular nurse had just went on her lunch break (only 1/2 hour long break). So the stand-in nurse checked me and said I was dialated to a 7-8 so she went to get the doc to give me a bolster to help with the pain. Just as the anesthesiologist got there, another nurse check me and within 5 mins I had gone from a 7-8 to a full 10. She got me ready to start pushing and within minutes, my doctor was there ready to deliver (he was going to go into surgery so he was already waiting). I went from a 5 to delivering Nathan in an hour. He was born at 1:30 pm. He was 7 lbs. 10 oz. 20 inches long. He has blonde hair and doesn't look much like Amelia did. I have been having major tension in my upper back and neck and have been having killer tension headaches so I haven't been able to get on before now. I didn't tear but I did have some "rug burns" as the doctor called it. I feel great besides the headaches.
